I love using this short shotgun mic package; it is so convenient. There are times when a parabolic is the perfect tool and others when the shotgun is. The shotgun is easier to carry and set up, but the parabolic captures songs with less noise interference; that has been my experience. I purchased the shotgun for wilderness camping and backcountry fly-ins to remote areas because of its superior portability. The packages offered by Stith Recording are the way to go for several reasons: they work, all the mixing of equipment has been carefully engineered for you, and working with Stith Recording is hassle-free. You could spend a lot of time on the Internet hunting for recording equipment recommendations for bird songs; there are very few, and those are not well thought out. Or you could go with Stith Recording, which has made it easy for you to be up and recording in no time with packages that have the seal of approval from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. I have found that files transferred to Adobe's Auditon or the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Raven Pro (or Lite) are a joy to work with and transfer to eBird. I also put my completed files into Lightroom with their corresponding species' photographs. None of this would have been possible without the offerings from Stith Recording. In addition, Cornell Lab of Ornithology offers online tutorials for both Audition and Raven Pro designed specifically for bird song recordists. Cornell used to offer an annual sound recording workshop, but due to the Covid epidemic, they have put it on hold...check their website for its reinstatement. Stith Recording provides step-by-step directions on setting up your Sound Devices Mix Pre-3 (prepared by Cornell) for optimum bird song recording. Working with Stith Recording was a pleasure, especially Kathie Bennett, a rare professional. I give Stith Recording and the equipment in their packages five-star ratings each.
