I must first state that I am a complete beginner with respect to recording bird songs with anything more sophisticated than an iPhone, but becoming a serious recordist has been immeasurably aided by dealing with Stith Recording. This professional kit is incredible, the fidelity of the recordings and the sensitivity of the parabolic microphone astounded me. The kit is very easy to assemble and transport, but you should have a shoulder bag and some lithium batteries (requires one of the sleds recommended below) while in the field. On Stith Recording's website, there are directions from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology on the setup of the Mix Pre-3 II to maximize the success of recording bird songs, and they are a breeze to follow. The folks at Stith Recording have thought of everything and will ensure your journey into recording will be painless and worry-free. They are customer-driven and friendly: Kathie Bennett is a special delight. I researched equipment extensively prior to settling on this professional package and have not had any cause for regret. This package is a huge step up from an iPhone and I recommended it and Stith Recording. I would also recommend purchasing an MX-LM1 battery sled (for one lithium battery) or an MX-L Mount battery sled (for one or two lithium batteries) and a shoulder carrying case that is big enough to hold the sled you have chosen. These items will enhance your time and comfort in the field. I believe these items are available through Stith Recording.
